Getting a job in the US semiconductor industry with education from Taiwan

foundation-Getting a job in the US semiconductor industry with education from Taiwan

Do you want to use your education from Taiwan and get a job in the US semiconductor industry?

Here are top tips to get the career you want.

USA employers need Taiwanese workers

The world’s digital transformation is accelerating and requires more technology and global workers. The semiconductor industry in the US is expected to hire many employees with Taiwan education for manufacturing, engineering, quality assurance, customer service, and management positions. There are also open positions in Artificial intelligence (Ai), the cloud, internet-of-things (IOT), smartphones, robotics, computers, automation, and drones, which all require advanced technology and chips.

To meet growing demand, semiconductor fabricators called “fabs” are hiring global workers from Taiwan.

Companies that need skilled workers from Taiwan

There are many semiconductor companies in the US needing skilled workers including Qualcomm, NVIDIA, AMD, Cree, Micron, SK Group, ASML, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), GlobalFoundry, GlobalWafers, Intel, Micron, Rogue Valley Microdevices, Texas Instruments, Wolfspeed, NVIDIA, and Samsung. The US Government is investing through the CHIPS Act which is pumping billions of dollars into the semiconductor industry.

Global employees are also needed by suppliers to work in semiconductor logistics, materials, managerial, customer service, on-site construction, manufacturing, IT, R&D, and testing. Tektronix, Kyma Technologies, Tosoh Quartz, and Tecdia, are a few of the suppliers.

There are many US employers needing workers with Taiwan education and skills to fill open positions.

Recruiting and staffing companies

To get a good position in the semiconductor industry many workers from Taiwan go through recruiting agencies and staffing companies, also called headhunters. Recruiters want qualified candidates with the right skills. When working with a recruiter, make sure your C.V., curriculum vitae, or resume is current and shows your skills. Some candidates run their C.V. through an Ai generator to showcase their talent in the best light possible.

Gather your passport, photo, and academic records. Many candidates have their academic degrees and transcripts evaluated by a credential evaluation service to show the equivalent value of their education in the US. A credential evaluation helps the recruiter know which candidates meet USCIS, government, and employer requirements.

If your documents require translation from Taiwanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, or another language into English, it is best to use a translation company that certifies accuracy.

Do not pay US recruiting agencies to find a job

In the US, employers pay a fee or commission to recruiters for finding good candidates. Potential employees do not pay US recruiters to find a job. This may be different in other parts of the world or other fields.

Apprenticeships and Colleges

To meet the demand for workers in the Western chipmaking industry, some US colleges have Registered Apprenticeship programs associated with the US Dept. of Labor and the Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship Sprint.

Schools with apprenticeship programs include Maricopa Community College in Arizona, Hudson Valley Community College in New York, and Austin Community College in Texas. In Taiwan there are buxiban or cram schools, also called hagwons in South Korea or eikaiwa in Japan. These supplemental learning classes prepare students for universities and colleges. Most students in the US do not attend supplemental learning classes because community colleges have open admissions to enroll with just a high school degree or equivalent.

Visa types

To be a global worker, entrepreneur, or for advancing your academic career, the US offers visas including H2B, H-1B, E, L, O, F, J, and EB2 National Interest Waiver.

You may need an Expert Opinion by a PhD professor to describe your qualifications and experience as a bachelor’s, master’s, or graduate degree to meet US government requirements for some visas. Look for an Expert Opinion company that has a large network of experts in fields from computer science, aeronautics, business, healthcare, medicine, biotech, energy and sciences. An Expert Opinion by a recognized authority can give you an advantage by showing the value you will provide to your employer.

If you need to meet with a consular officer, you may need to make an appointment online to reserve your spot. Consular officers conduct interviews and take ink-free digital fingerprints.

Semiconductor organizations

Check to see if your potential employer is affiliated with semiconductor organizations such as SEMI, SIA, NIIT, EICC, GSA, IEEE, SWE, ASME or another reputable group.

Stand out with a successful credential evaluation

Not all foreign credential evaluations are equal. You want evaluations that are performed by members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) to show they follow ethical requirements and are trusted.

Top credential evaluation companies provide prompt, responsive service by staff and senior analysts using proprietary databases, all leading to successful results. You want a company with translation available and no hidden fees so that all of your education is included for a single price.

A successful evaluation provides confidence so you can get the best job in the US to build economic security for your family and make them proud.
